WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY SET-UP GUIDE DOWNLOAD
PDF
Note that the directions below are to assist in properly
setting up an Internet connection between your Averatec
computer and your existing wireless router. Correctly
completing the steps below will allow you to connect to the
wireless router, but does not necessarily ensure that you will
have an Internet connection. For further information regarding
your IP configuration please contact your Internet Service
Provider.
1. Connecting to an Existing Wireless
Network
Step 1 - Please make sure that the WLAN
switch is turned to the "ON" position (refer to the Quick
Start Guide).
Step 2 - “Right Click” on the wireless
network connection icon in the Windows taskbar and go to
“"View Available Wireless Networks".

Step 3 - The wireless network menu will
appear with all available networks within range listed. Choose
your wireless network (ex. “AVERATEC54G”) and click “connect”.
If you have setup a Security-enabled network the system
will prompt you for the Network Key before connecting.

It is important to note that you cannot just connect to any
wireless network. Most networks are security-enabled and
require a password (Network Key) in order to gain access.
Depending on your location and the networks within range you
may have access to an “unsecured” wireless networks (local
Library and other free “Hot Spots”, etc.). These networks are
configured for open access (Network Key not required). Please
be aware that information sent over this network may be
visible to others.
Please contact your specific router manufacturer regarding
any network security issues.
Step 4 - Once the network address has been
acquired you should be able to open your Internet browser. If
you encounter any problems with assigning an Internet Protocol
(IP) address to your computer please contact your ISP
directly.

2. Setting Up a Wireless Network
Please note that these are general
instructions. Consult your specific router manufacturer for
detailed set-up instructions.

Step 1 - Obtain a wireless router
Averatec recommends using an 802.11b/g compliant router, as
all Averatec laptops ship with 802.11b/g- capable internal
wireless network cards. 802.11a compliant routers will not
work with 802.11b/g cards. Some examples of router
manufacturers include 3Com, D-Link, Linksys, and Netgear, and
may be purchased at most computer or electronics stores as
well as online. You will also need a dedicated connection to
the Internet, such as one provided by DSL, cable modem, or
fiber optics. Please contact your local Internet Service
Provide (ISP) for information on accessing the Internet.
Step 2 - Connect your wireless router
Turn off and un-plug your cable or DSL modem and connect
the Ethernet cable to the Wide Area Network (WAN/Internet)
port on your router. The modem will always be connected to the
Internet, the router will be connected to the modem, and your
computer will be connected to the router (wirelessly or with
an Ethernet cable). Here, we will cover how to connect to the
router wirelessly. Plug in and turn back on your DSL or cable
modem. Wait a minute or two, and then turn on your wireless
router by plugging the power in to the back of the router.
Refer to the documentation provided by your router
manufacturer to determine when the router is online and ready
to go. If the router never receives the expected information
from the modem, please contact your router manufacturer or ISP
for further assistance. Your router may require some extra
configuration, especially if you wish to enable wireless
security or connect multiple computers.
